The work towards organizing Sandy Lake Western Days for 2017 has begun.
Western Days is Sandy Lake's main community event of the year and has been happening since the early 1990s.
The latest committee meeting was held on Tuesday, April 18th to start putting together activities for this years fun event.
Western Days 2017 promises to be a very full weekend, as it usually is, that will include some activities from previous years along with some new ones.
The main issue surrounding Western Days is securing enough volunteers to make the weekend run smoothly, which is mostly due to the village's low number of residents. This year there will be a push to sign up more volunteers in a coordinated effort so that they work for a shorter time and then are able to enjoy the day of fun.
Watch in the coming months for notifications about giving a little time to help out Western Days this year.
ANYONE interested in doing anything towards with important village event is welcome to do so. That includes cross-posting this blog post, or sharing it on your FB timeline or contacting a volunteer rep.
The volunteer contacts for this year's Western Days are Charlene Lewandoski and Anne Bachewich.
Sandy Lake is well known for its fabulous fishing in all seasons. People used to fish from the lake for subsistence in the last century and people from all over Manitoba came to the village to utilize the lake and and its recreational possibilities.
Today, most fishing from the lake is done for enjoyment and recreation.
One great way to participate in this pastime are ice fishing derbies. The Sandy Lake Merchant's Association will be holding their 5th annual derby on Saturday March, 18, 2017. The derby will take place at the "waterfront" from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., weather permitting. The snow date is March 25th.
This is a catch and release derby at $40 per hole and $60 for 2 holes for the same person.
Prizes are being donated by different businesses and organizations.
1st - $1,500
2nd - $1000
3rd - $500
4th - Ice Auger
5th - Town Behind Sled with hitch
6th - Buddy Heater

There will also be a 50/50 draw and a concession selling burgers, smokies, hot dogs, and chili on a bun.
